PSDB: Newborn Screening Part 3: Hearing

Course Title: Newborn Screening Part Three – Hearing Screening 
Trainer: Linda True 
Timing: 1 hour; Offered One Time Per Semester
 
Description: About 3 out of every 1,000 babies born in the US have some level of hearing loss and are usually born to hearing parents. Because it is so important for brain development, the American Academy of Pediatrics considers hearing loss to be an urgent problem that needs to be addressed right away. Without early intervention, children with hearing loss are at risk for falling behind their typical-hearing peers in language, social-emotional, and academic skills. Through this training, you will learn what a newborn hearing screen is, how it is completed, and what follow up is necessary if a child does not pass their initial screening. 
 
Learning Objectives: 
  1. Understand and describe what the newborn hearing screening consists of,
  2. Know the 1-3-6 goals and their purpose, 
  3. Assist parents with understanding their results, when additional testing is needed, and what resources are available to them. 
 
Competencies Addressed: Infant and Early Childhood Development & Community Resources and Support. 
 
Reflective Questions:
  1. Describe a time that you were able to assist a parent with coordinating a hearing screening for their child. If you have not done this, please describe what you would do to assist the parent with getting a hearing referral for their child. 
  2. If you are working with a family, who has a baby that did not pass their initial hearing screening, what would they need to do next?
