Description: Family planning is often not on pregnant and recently pregnant individuals' radar, but it is an important piece of postpartum care.  According to the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG), individuals should avoid having less than six months between pregnancies, and ideally spacing pregnancies more than 18 months apart.  This session will provide a high-level overview of the importance of family planning in preconception and interconception health, family planning options and methods, the importance of client choice, and how to find family planning resources in your community.

Learning Objectives:
  1. Recognize the importance of family planning and reproductive health for pregnant and parenting individuals
  2. Understand different types of contraceptive methods and their effectiveness
  3. Understand the importance of client choice in pregnancy spacing and choosing a contraceptive method
  4. Know where to find family planning resources for clients based on their needs, insurance coverage, income, and preference.

Competencies Addressed: Family Health, Safety, and Nutrition & Community Resources and Support.

Reflective Questions:
  1. How would you describe the risks and benefits of birth spacing to a new mother?
  2. How have you applied the information you learned during this course to your practice?
  3. Describe a time that you assisted a parent with understanding different contraception methods and the effectiveness of each. If you have not done this yet, how would you share this information with a family you work with?
