Course Title: CAPPA Labor Doula Training 
Trainer: Katie Nyberg, CLD, CPD, CNPE, CLE, CPST
Timing: 18 hours; Broken out over three days (8:30am – 3:30pm)

Please note that partial credit will not be applied for this training. All sessions in this series must be attended. Sessions will be held February 1st, 8th and 15th. 

Description: CAPPA Labor Doulas fill an important role in providing emotional, physical, and evidence-based, informational support to the birthing client and their support team throughout their perinatal journey. During this training, you will learn ways to support people as they begin to prepare for their upcoming birth. This includes available birth options, comfort measures, labor positioning, pushing techniques, communicating with providers, advocacy, and infant feeding options. After this training, you will receive a one-year CAPPA Membership which includes benefits like weekly emails containing tips/info for supporting families, annual conference admission, CAPPA online support community for professionals, free monthly education center videos, and more! Learning Objectives: 
  1. The participant will identify ways to support a person through prenatal appointments as they prepare for their upcoming birth.
  2. The participant will be able to list ways a pregnant person can communicate with their providers about their birth options. 
  3. The participant will compare ways to be an advocate for the birthing person/family. 
  4. The participant will be able to demonstrate various labor comfort measures and positions that promote labor progress. 
  5. The participant will be able to explain various infant feeding options available to a birthing person immediately after birth.  

Prerequisite Required: Prenatal Basics for Home Visitors 

Competencies Addressed: Infant and Early Childhood Development; Family Health, Safety, and Nutrition; Community Resources and Support; & Relationship-Based Family Partnerships.

  1. Describe the steps you would take to support a parents’ understanding of weekly fetal development to help them recognize prenatal milestones.
  2. How would you explain the importance of prenatal visits to a parent you are working with? 
  3. How have you applied the information you learned from this session to your practice?
